Donna Maya produces unconventional bass music, plays theremin with an instrument-atypical sound aesthetic, is a DJ and sound artist and the first Ableton certified trainer for the software Live. Her musical focus is on urban spaces, which she uses for acoustic diggings to create impressive sound memorials.
Donna Maya’s current live program “Lost Spaces / Ruin Theory” is based on self-created field recordings that reflects the sound of the city of Detroit. She recorded abandoned locations, public places and streets and their inhabitants, from which, in the context of their historical significance, she extracted the mood and the special sounds, that those places still contain today. With the theremin, she navigates through the acoustic spaces. Her fascination for the theremin, which is played without any physical contact, comes from the fact, that she holds the music literally in her hands, shaping the sound with her movements. This opens up a new way to directly and expressively play electronic music as well as to compose beyond the 12-tone scale and approach new varieties of club music. Her concert will be accompanied by videos, which provide a visual insight into the recorded places.
Donna Maya is based in Berlin. She composed turntable concerts for philharmonic orchestra and DJ as well as contributions for soundtracks like the movie “kurz und schmerzlos” by Fatih Akin. Her music got released internationally on various labels and her creative style led to invitations to perform at Sonar in Barcelona, Transmediale in Berlin and at “Pinakothek der Moderne” in Munich.

marylou is a musician and sound designer from France landed in the Netherlands. As a singer –soprano trained- and guitar/autoharp practicer, she performs with her own compositions influenced by the alternative folk music scene and French poetry. Seeing music as an evolutive environment to redesign and to stir up with atypical tools, she’s nourishing her stage’s soundscape with biophonies -birds songs- she records, and instruments/sound machines that she creates or transforms. Indeed, as a sound designer, marylou likes to perceive each environment she enters as a sensitive orchestra to listen prudently, and sometimes to hack and to re-create.
